Mobile phones have over the years grown to become an almost irreplaceable part of the lives of billions of people in the world today. Ten to fifteen years ago, mobile phones were merely a fanciful gadget that most viewed as either a luxury or an expensive toy. With the development of technology, mobile phones have become readily available to almost anyone. Nevertheless, with the growth of capitalism in the industry, mobile phone manufacturers want more and more people ditching their old phones and buying new ones. This has led to a significant rise in the number of discarded and unused phones in the world. Today, close to a hundred million phones lie unused in the United kingdom alone with more handsets set to add to that number annually.

Recycling mobile phones is one way in which the growing number of mobile phone users can participate in the quest to build a more sustainable ecosystem. Going green by recycling mobile phones has a number of incentives to both mobile phone manufacturers and users. Mobile phone recycling helps both companies and individuals go green. Mobile phones are made using a number of compounds that if disposed of wrongly can leach into the ecosystem and poison the environment. These compounds include lead, mercury, arsenic, bromated compounds, PVC, antimony, beryllium, barium, selenium and chromium. All these compounds are both scarce and recyclable. This gives added incentive to both users and manufacturers to find sustainable ways of disposing of mobile phones in a safe and conscientious manner.
Recycling involves a number of methods. One method used is the refurbishing of used mobile phones. Most mobile phones in the US and UK are discarded after about 18 months. Of this number, almost all are discarded because of what has popularly become known as upgrading. This means the discarded phones are still fully functional but have been sacrificed for better, more advanced features and specifications in new models. It is therefore possible to refurbish these phones and resell them to those who cannot afford new phones. Taking out the usable parts is another way of recycling. This involves either taking out individual parts or smelting the whole phone and extracting the individual components.
Everyone has an obligation to go green as it is the only way to build a sustainable planet and perhaps even reverse all that has already gone wrong. Recycling mobile phones if leveraged on the number of mobile phone users in the world can translate into a significant boost to the quest for a better, greener world.
